About Us

LYTE was founded in 2002 as a non-profit, community supported activity designed to offer an education-based acting environment to the children of the Longwood School District and its neighbors. We are sponsored by the Yaphank Presbyterian Church and supported by local school, business, community and civic members as well as  television personalities and private individuals. Our primary focus is to deliver to our children a means to improve interactive skills while having an awful lot of FUN! Together we continue to produce a low-cost, award-winning (2005 Brookhaven Youth Bureau), diverse and ever-expanding cultural program to our Eastern Long Island families!

Barry Davanzo, Co-Founder

Barry "The Don" Davanzo lives now in the backwoods of North Dakota, but once he was a Long Islander like you and me. Barry achieved legendary status through a variety of Longwood events and groups, and for LYTE, he was always willing to put the lights on. Now he attends the University of North Dakota while working for Northwest Airlines, being a lawman and driving a limousine. He is a man of many talents, many skills and many frequent flyer miles!

Norah Hoelle, Creative Consultant

Norah has been active in the Longwood community for years.  As a parent of two children, she is a valued leader within the Longwood PTA, Boy Scouts of America, and Girl Scouts of America.  She is an active parishioner at St. John the Baptist RC Church in Wading River.  LYTE is delighted to have her skills as a youth leader and artist.  Norah has the creative ability to fabricate the most glamorous gown out of the most simple of materials. She affects people this way too. Her cheerful smile and laughter affects us all!

Susan Hartmann, Creative Consultant

Susan is an experienced and all  around talented staff member.  She has performed in many shows and offers our students an extensive knowledge of musical theater.  She currently works with us on choreography but has directed productions in the past as well.  In her spare time, she is an attorney, has her teaching degree in Secondary English, enjoys quilting, and still has time to be an awesome wife and mother.  We feel fortunate to have her on our staff.  We love you, Susan!

Kevin Story, Creative Consultant

Kevin is an accomplished musician and composer and enjoys sharing his talents with the LYTE students.  He has performed in countless shows including Into the Woods, Kiss Me Kate, and Someone to Watch Over Me at the Dix Hills Performing Arts Center.  He has directed many shows including Lend Me A Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo and  Woody Allen's Don't Drink the Water.  This past summer, he worked as musical director at The Airport Playhouse for their performances of Tom Sawyer and Carousel.  He currently attends Five Towns College as a musical theater major.  He is the director of LYTEhouse Entertainment.  Visit his website for more details.

Cris Amico, Creative Consultant

The love of her craft as well as her new and old found friends tells any outsider of the outstanding respect and admiration we have for her. She is a brilliant, veteran Choreographer who is always eager to accept the next challenge and bring us all along for the fun ride. Cris currently makes herself available to countless children in her capacity as a teacher in the New Jersey Public School system. Though she no longer lives close by, she works with us on our projects, sometimes traveling all the way from New Jersey just to add that personal touch.  Now that's dedication! Congrats to Jay and Cris on the birth of their FIRST child, Payton, a daughter!

Suzanne Story, Founder

Suzanne  is a fifth grade teacher at Longwood Middle School. Her love of theater began in the early 1980's when she was a speech-language therapist for young children with disabilities.  She began integrating drama into her therapy and quickly realized its impact on enhancing language development, building strong interactive skills, strengthening  memory and concentration, improving self-esteem, and nurturing friendships. Suzanne unknowingly began LYTE six years ago when she started the Longwood Middle School Drama Club and sadly had to turn away 140 students due to size and budget restrictions.  Feeling the need to address this growing interest in theater among our community's youth, she was led to create the roots from which LYTE would grow. Beginning with an enrollment of five participants, LYTE has had more than 300 students participate in their programs over the years.  Suzanne is constantly looking for ways to expand and upgrade the program so that no child will be turned away due to size or financial restriction.  When she's not busy doing LYTE, Suzanne loves to work in the garden, write poetry, paint, watch movies with her family, and allow her Middle School students to always remind her how much fun it is to learn from each other
